The Secret History by Donna Tartt is considered to be a modern classic. It regained popularity last year, thanks to booktok and a lot of people were talking about it. It took me a while to get to, but I finally read it and had mixed feelings.
This isn’t my kind of book generally as it’s not a lighthearted read. It is more of a reflection on society. What is interesting is that we all have experienced something similar in one way or another. A time when we are desperate to fit in with a certain group, or want to prove ourselves as worthy.
In modern day, you have it with influencers. People buying stuff just because someone online said that it was a ‘must-have’. This story follows Richard who is desperate to prove that he is wealthy. That matters to him and is his secret. Again, many of us can relate whether it’s by spending a bit too much on fashion, or investing in luxury skincare, or getting in debt for a fancy car, we want to show we have money.
The main point of The Secret History, is how far are you willing to change yourself in order to fit in? At what point have you gone too far with neglecting your morals?
That being said, below is my full Goodreads review of The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
