The Side-Effects of Stress - Hair Loss In Women

We all know that stress is bad for you and that there are a wide variety of symptoms that come along with it. Unfortunately, thinning hair and hair loss is one of them, something that I am experiencing myself.

Does my hair falling out mean I will go bold?

As a woman, this was something that I was extremely worried about as well as worrying if stress-related hair loss is permanent. It’s important to be clear about how important it is to diagnose the reason for your hair loss.

Hair falling out because of stress is usually down to a condition called telogen effluvium. It’s called this because of the process that goes on with hair growth, and the fact that stress pushes forward certain stages of the hair growth process. My understanding of this is that when you experience extreme stress, your hair can go into its ‘rest’ phase early which means that you end up with a lot more shedding happening at the same time when it reaches the shedding stage of the cycle. This can mean that your hair starts falling out three months after you experience a high level of stress.

The good news is, that with hair loss related to stress, it’s very rare to go completely bald. It usually causes your hair to look thin as there’s less of it. But at least the thinning is even.

Will my hair grow back?

If you address the stress then it should grow back. That’s a journey that I’m on now, as I’ve only addressed the stress since I noticed my hair falling out. That was the final moment when I had decided that enough is enough. Dealing with your hair falling out is stressful enough so if it can be avoided, it should be.

Is there a hair loss treatment?

If the hair loss is due to stress, then that means the process has started and it’s usually a case of waiting it out. Stress relief is an important part of this. There are certain medications, but you should consult a doctor to see what can help. It can be worth looking into scalp care and hair care while going through this process. It can be viewed as an addition to your skincare routine.

Daily, you should give yourself a mini scalp massage for a few minutes, and it can be worth looking at scalp serums and scalp oils that can help you maintain a healthy scalp. Brushing your hair daily with a natural bristle hairbrush also will help you maintain healthy hair and spread the natural oils from your scalp down the strands.

The whole process is said to take around six months but that all provides the stress has been dealt with. If you suffer hair loss because of a clear event, then that’s a slightly more positive prognosis, but what if you suffer from chronic stress? I fall into that category so it’s hard to say but all you can focus on is managing your day-to-day life and taking things one step at a time.

When it comes to any hair loss or female hair loss because of stress, it can be an emotionally challenging time. Thinning hair can make us feel less beautiful but it can also be a visible sign that we are not in a healthy state. Try to view it as an opportunity to fix things in your life and rebuild it in a way you want. Hopefully, by the end, you will not only have a better life for yourself, but a beautiful head of hair.
